Lector-The Liturgy of the Word forms the first part of the Mass and prepares the faithful to participate more fully in the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, especially at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass or at the Liturgy of the Hours, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ present in his own word proclaims the Gospel. (GIRM 29) From apostolic times to the present day, the primary way of hearing the Sacred Scriptures was through the Divine Liturgy, what we call the Mass.  

Lay persons who function in the ministerial role of Lector proclaim the Word of God.  They must prepare themselves through prayer and study of the successive readings of the Sunday Cycle to proclaim the Word of God with faith and conviction.
